Jimmy Page and Aleister Crowley: Deciphering the Mage

I have been accused of being a “black magician.” No more foolish statement was ever made about me. I despise the thing to such an extent that I can hardly believe in the existence of people so debased and idiotic as to practice it. ” - Aleister Crowley

Jimmy Page photo above, taken by Herb Greene, 1968.  Page’s interest in Crowley would be, like Crowley himself, grossly misrepresented and misunderstood.  Perhaps even maligned.

In the early 1970s, Jimmy Page owned an occult bookshop and publishing house, “The Equinox Booksellers and Publishers” in Kensington High Street, London, eventually closing it as the increasing success of Led Zeppelin resulted in his having insufficient time to devote to it.  In “I’m With The Band,” Pamela Des Barres recalls one of the more interesting aspects of her relationship with Page: scouring Hollywood for rare occult literature to ship back to the Guitar God.

The infamous Boleskin House, (purchased by Page, formerly owned by Aleister Crowley) lies on the edge of Loch Ness in Scotland.  Sections of Page’s fantasy sequence in the film The Song Remains the Same were filmed at night on the mountainside directly behind Boleskine House.

Jimmy Page interview below, from Guitar World January 2008:

(Guitar World) Could we talk a little about the meaning behind your Sequence [in The Song Remains The Same movie]?

(Page) To me, the significance is very clear, isn’t it?

(GW) Well, I find it interesting that you were choosing to represent yourself as a hermit at a time when you were really quite a public figure.

(Page) Well, I was hermetic. I was involved in the hermetic arts, but I wasn’t a recluse. Or maybe I was… The image of the hermit that was used for the [inside cover] art-work on Led Zeppelin IV and in the movie actually has it’s origins in a painting of Christ called The Light of the World by the pre-Raphaelite artist William Holman Hunt. The imagery was later transferred to the Waite tarot deck [the most popular tarot deck in use in the English-speaking world]. My segment was supposed to be the aspirant going to the beacon of truth, which is represented by the hermit and his journey toward it. What I was trying to say through the transformation was that enlightenment can be achieved at any point in time; it just depends on when you want to access it. In other words you can always see the truth, but do you recognize it when you see it or do you have to reflect back on it later?

(GW) There was always a certain amount of speculation about your occult studies. It may have been subtle, but you weren’t really hiding it.

(Page) I was living it. That’s all there is to it. It was my life - that fusion of magick and music.

(GW) Your use of symbols was very advanced. The sigil [symbols of occult powers] on Led Zeppelin IV and the embroidery on your stage clothes from that time period are good examples on how you left your mark on popular culture. It’s something that major corporations are aggressively pursuing these days: using symbols as a from of branding.

(Page) You mean talismanic magick? Yes, I knew what I was doing. There’s no point in saying much about it, because the more you discuss it, the more eccentric you appear to be. But the fact is - as far as I was concerned - it was working, so I used it. But it’s really no different than people who wear ribbons around their wrists: it’s a talismanic approach to something. Well let me amend that: it’s not exactly the same thing, but it is in the same realm. I’ll leave this subject by saying the four musical elements of Led Zeppelin making a fifth is magick into itself. That’s the alchemical process.

Stairway To Heaven: a glorious manifestation of the great work

The Crowley quotes that revolutionized occult thinking for Page and countless other seekers of truth:

“Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law.”

“Love is the law.  Love under will.”

“Every man and every woman is a star.”

Jimmy Page, misunderstood mage.

Just thought I'd update y'all on my progress with "Achilles' Last Stand" tabs. I found dead-on accurate tab for the song, and do you want to know how many pages it took up when I printed?

8. Full, except the 8th, which is about 3/4 full. And I didn't even include the lyrical guide as to the vocal cues that Robert gives. Because that would probably take up another 5.

Jimmy Page fan club status has just been raised (*I* think so...) by the fact that my new baby, my Les Paul (cherry sunburst <3) is here! HOORAH! "In My Time of Dying" is next on my playlist. Hooray for shot glasses and alternate tunings!

If anyone has tab for the rhythm line to "Achilles' Last Stand," if you could email it to me at patrick.zeppelin@gmail.com, I'd greatly appreciate it. I can only play the solo, and I'd love to be able to switch from lead guitar to rhythm guitar in mid-song. It's a very colourful rhythm line, I love it.

Many thanks!

-Patrick

P.S. - From now on, since everybody I know already does anyways, y'all can call me Patty Cake.

mood: Where's that confounded bridge
I find it amusing how I have Jimmy Page's middle name as my first name, and his first name as my last name. :] That and our birthdays are 8 days apart (mine is January 1) AND how we both started playing guitar on 1930s acoustic guitars. Creeeeepy, huh?

I played "Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You" on it a few times. It sounds so perfect. <3 that guitar. I hate the owner though... Long story.

Ok I have some really dumb questions...

What is the correct way to pronounce "Bron-Yr-Aur"?
And how come there's 2 different ways to spell it?
(Bron-Yr-Aur & Bron-Y-Aur)

Hokay, so I'm a n00b to the community, but basically, all I can say is that Jimmy Page is a living Jesus Christ. Minus the whole Romans-hate-him thing. The cross, too.

So I'm getting a Les Paul in a week. Technically, I already own her, but she's not being brought over until a week is up. I can't wait! She's going to be black, white, or a light sunburst (I know the guy I'm buying it from personally, I told him that any color is fine with me). I'm also grabbing a violin bow from my dad, he doesn't use it anyway, and he's too stupid to notice these things.

Hhanyways, glad to be a member of this community. Much <3.

Just wondering, do any of you have any Jimmy-related tattoos/plan on getting one? Or know of anyone with a tattoo? I'm just curious how many people have the symbol, and what other ideas they may have come up with.
Even if they're not strictly Jimmy, post a picture of your Zep tattoo anyway...

And here's a picture, just because :)

well, i just joined, and it's always nice to give a hello to everyone.
My name is lorena, and of course i'm a huge pagey fan, to the point that i am known as mrs page to everyone, friends and parents alike. =)
ive been a huge fan since i was a wee lass, infact he's the reason i play guitar, but i know im not the only one to ever say that obviously.
this is the first jimmy page community ive ever joined, truth is ive always been a bit reluctant, theres no logic to it.
but i know we're all nice people here coming together because of one gifted man.

btw-i always like to let people know that i do enjoy making clothes, and have made many a 'Mr Page oriented' piece,
so if anyone has been struggling to find a shirt or what have you, im more than willing to extended my jimmy love to you and make you one groovy piece! it dont cost anything either, because money is useless to me, seriously. =)

sorry for the ramble, i hope everyones morning, day, and such goes super!
peace and love
